Welcome back from what we hope was a relaxing holiday weekend.
We were reminded of the true purpose behind Memorial Day. So often we are focused on the picnics, parties, “summer launch”, and celebrations that we forget this is a time to remember those who fought for our freedom. And many times, we mistake the holiday for a time to honor those who are active, inactive or retired armed forces members.
This sparked a thought: perhaps it’s time to consider an expansion of this special holiday weekend be to Memorial and Honor Weekend. Memorial Day would remain (as it should) a time to reflect, remember and salute, while an added Honor Day (Friday, perhaps?) becomes a time to thank and laud our military men and women. And while we’re at it, let’s consider adding our newest heroes — our healthcare and frontline workers — to this Honor Day.
Who’s in for Memorial and Honor Weekend?
Until we’re able to get this established, enjoy this week’s finds that continue to move us through this time of rebuilding and reimagining.

Reads of the Week
With more than 70% of U.S. employees saying the pandemic is the most stressful time in their careers, more and more companies are likely to create programs like “Emotional Resource Groups” (ERGs). ERGs are designed to develop communities of people with shared identities and experiences within the company, and might just be what we think is a strong path to more open communication about mental health. Earlier this month, Airbnb’s CEO and Co-founder Brian Chesky’s open letter to his employees announcing the layoffs of nearly 25% of the company was widely shared via social media. What We’re Watching
In the 90s, a group of American surfers, known as Momentum Generation including 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater, began dominating the sport and changing the surfer culture. Momentum Generation is the story of how these friends, from different backgrounds, bonded at “Benji’s House” and pushed each other to new performance levels. Hint: if you need a break from your current view, you could always watch this movie on mute and pretend you are in the islands.
