Braver Angels

Leading through transition: Finding the right CEO to meet the moment

Executive Search

Good Scout helped us navigate a pivotal leadership transition in our organization’s history. They dug in with us to understand our unique culture, our aspirations for impact at scale, and our mission to bridge toxic partisan divides in America. Their partnership gave us clarity and confidence in selecting the right leader to take us forward, and they were delightful to work with, too.

Aspiration

Braver Angels, a national nonprofit leading the movement to bridge America’s growing political divides, faced a critical moment: the transition of its founding president after nearly a decade of leadership. The organization needed a CEO who could uphold its deeply cross-partisan mission, honor its volunteer-driven culture, and expand its impact at a time when America’s divisions have never felt more urgent.

The board sought a leader who could galvanize volunteers, build strategic partnerships, scale organizational capacity, and deepen Braver Angels’ influence on the national stage—someone both visionary and grounded, able to meet a complex moment in our democracy.

Approach

Good Scout partnered closely with the Braver Angels board and search committee to design and lead a rigorous and expansive executive search process:

  • Immersed deeply in the organization to understand Braver Angels’ culture, ambitions, and strategic priorities.
  • Engaged interest holders broadly, including board members, staff, volunteer leaders, and members nationwide, to define the leadership profile and success criteria.
  • Built a comprehensive search strategy, combining proactive national recruitment with the energy of Braver Angels’ powerful member networks.
  • Facilitated a Red/Blue balanced search committee, ensuring diverse perspectives shaped decision-making at every stage.
  • Evaluated over 400 applicants, narrowing the pool to 25 top candidates, then 13 semifinalists — a group that included business leaders, civic entrepreneurs, government officials, and military veterans.

Throughout the process, Good Scout served as a strategic partner, helping Braver Angels weigh trade-offs, assess cultural fit, and connect organizational aspirations with the leadership capabilities required to achieve them.

Outcome

The search culminated in the appointment of Maury Giles as Braver Angels’ new CEO. Maury is a seasoned executive, dedicated Braver Angels volunteer, and passionate bridge-builder.

  • A longtime Braver Angels member, Maury brought credibility within the organization alongside two decades of experience founding and scaling mission-driven organizations.
  • His leadership style and track record of building high-trust teams positioned him to motivate volunteers and inspire funders alike.
  • Under Maury’s leadership, Braver Angels is poised to grow its national presence, strengthen its impact, and deepen its influence in bridging political divides across America.

This transition marked not just a change in leadership, but a pivotal step toward fulfilling Braver Angels’ mission at scale.
